A Board devoted to people who are going, would like to go etc.

Post 2 by Lindsay3.14 (the Zone BBS remains forever my home page) on Wednesday, 08-Apr-2009 23:13:55

I'm definitely planning on going, as long as everything works out in terms of time and finances.

Post 3 by SingerOfSongs (Heresy and apostasy is how progress is made.) on Thursday, 09-Apr-2009 9:33:11

It's not for absolutely certain, but I'm relatively sure I'll be going.

Post 4 by Texas Shawn (The cute, cuddley, little furr ball) on Thursday, 09-Apr-2009 9:43:32

I had planned to go, but don't think it will happen now. guess I'll have to wait till it's back in Dallas.

Post 5 by marrie1 (Veteran Zoner) on Thursday, 09-Apr-2009 11:57:02

I hope I get to go this year. I promoced someone I'd play teh piano for them at the PAD tallent night.

Post 6 by buschic (Account disabled) on Thursday, 09-Apr-2009 12:24:00

I wish they would have it closer to canada, lol, like in buffulo or Detroit if it were there I'd definitely go, but with where it is this year, I just cant afford the plane fare, as it's really expensive flying out of Toronto, so I'd be thinking of taking the bus there.

Post 7 by jamesk (This site is so "educational") on Thursday, 09-Apr-2009 17:41:23

I'm definitely going. Look me up. It'll be lots of fun!

Post 8 by Shadow_Cat (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Thursday, 09-Apr-2009 18:48:11

Um, Emily, it is in Detroit this year. *Confused face*

Unfortunately, I doubt I'll be able to go. I really want to, since it's not in freaking Dallas, but money, or rather lack of money, is my problem. My last Convention was Atlanta in 07, and I miss going.

Post 9 by SEPTEMBER-TWILIGHT (CAN I TALK? PLEASE?) on Thursday, 09-Apr-2009 20:10:40

I'm pretty sure I'll be going this year. I heard it's a lot of fun, I can't wait. And yeah, it is in Detroit this year, lol

Post 10 by buschic (Account disabled) on Saturday, 11-Apr-2009 0:10:32

Post 13 by Mexican Spitfire (Eating the elephant one bite at a time.) on Tuesday, 12-May-2009 23:15:02

Post 14 by Miss Gorgeous (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Tuesday, 12-May-2009 23:20:38

I'm definitely going. I'm so excited. I can't wait. If anyone wants to hang out just let me know. I'll be there a day earlier. I have a feeling that its going to be a blast this year. Smiles

Post 15 by The Roman Battle Mask (Making great use of my Employer's time.) on Wednesday, 13-May-2009 2:17:55

Does it actually cost mony to go to the convention, or just travel rooms and meals?

Post 16 by H-TownOutlaw (Newborn Zoner) on Wednesday, 13-May-2009 3:24:21

I'll be there actin a fool.

Post 17 by Thom3of5 (Do the Doo.) on Friday, 15-May-2009 14:10:48

I'll be there. I already booked my room. I have a room with 2 beds and I'm not sure who else will be going with me. It's looking like just me.
Last year I was lucky to meet some of you like Liz, Lindsay, and Chelsea ( I love to live).
I hope to meet more of y'all

Thom

Post 18 by The Roman Battle Mask (Making great use of my Employer's time.) on Friday, 15-May-2009 20:51:55

Aww Tom I need a place to stay, can I stay with you big boy?

Post 19 by Thom3of5 (Do the Doo.) on Monday, 18-May-2009 5:55:59

I don't think so, Jared. There would be no time or reason to leave the room and see the convention attractions. You'd be too busy trying to map out who's slept with whom. At the national convention, that's a full time job. LOL

Post 20 by The Roman Battle Mask (Making great use of my Employer's time.) on Monday, 18-May-2009 11:17:46

Your wrong, I'd be doing my best to get on the map, I could fill in completely arbitrary relationships later.

Post 21 by Reyami (I've broken five thousand! any more awards going?) on Monday, 18-May-2009 12:06:04

How much does it cost? Could someone please post a link to a page that might have all the details? thanks.

Post 22 by H-TownOutlaw (Newborn Zoner) on Tuesday, 19-May-2009 1:31:24

go to www.nfb.org they have all the info on it

Post 23 by Miss Gorgeous (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Thursday, 21-May-2009 12:47:33

Yeah, go to the web site and then look for Upcomming events. The very first event would be the national convention. Read some of the information there and click the link that says, oneline convention registration page. Its fifty dollars for the registration fee including the banquet fee. Its actually cheap, you just have to find roomates to share the room with cause its more cheaper if you split the bill for the room. Three or four people in a room would work out well for people who plan to save some cash.

Post 24 by Mexican Spitfire (Eating the elephant one bite at a time.) on Thursday, 21-May-2009 20:49:31

Let's all get together at the convention and partyyyyy!

Post 25 by Miss Gorgeous (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Friday, 22-May-2009 13:05:29

How many people are really going. Lets all set up a day and time where everyone can get together. I know that everyone's got conflicting schedules, but it will work out with careful planning.

Post 26 by Thom3of5 (Do the Doo.) on Friday, 22-May-2009 13:13:35

I'm all for it. I get in on Friday afternoon and staying until Friday morning the 10th. I'd love to put some faces to the user names

i've completed the online registration this evening, and will definitely be there. *smile* Hope to run in to some of you. Yes, there are people i'd like to avoid, but, I think they know who they are. It's pretty much everyone on my ignore list I'd like to steer clear of.

I'll be going as well, I will be there from the third through the tenth.
My roommate and I got our room kinda late though, so I gotta stay at the hilton which is about 7 blocks away but I'm still looking forward to it.
Definitely we should have a meetup or two, have some drinks and just a good 'ol time.

Post 41 by Mexican Spitfire (Eating the elephant one bite at a time.) on Thursday, 11-Jun-2009 1:51:54

Ok i don't remember but is there any one who still needs a room. We are staying at the Mariott. Please let me know. This just goes out to girls lol lol. We girls gotta stick together. Please send me a pm or something. I may know where you can get some assistance if anyone needs a room and can help out with the rooms and stuff.

Post 42 by Mexican Spitfire (Eating the elephant one bite at a time.) on Thursday, 11-Jun-2009 2:02:07

Amendment to last post... Any girls needing assistance need to be over 21. Please send me a pm if you still need a room to stay in and if you are willing to help us out.

Post 43 by Thom3of5 (Do the Doo.) on Thursday, 11-Jun-2009 11:09:50

Ya. Any girls needing a room, let me know. lol
Seriously though, I do have another bed available in mine too. Male or female will be fine.
Send me a PM I'm staying from July 3 leaving out the 10th.
Half of the room rate should be about $35 per night.

I'm definitely going to be there! *grin* Can't wait to meet some of you!

Post 47 by Liz (The Original) on Sunday, 14-Jun-2009 11:46:37

I'm for sure going to be there! I'm really excited! If anyone is serious about wanting to try and schedule a time for a Zone Meetup, send me a private message with a time or times that would work. I'm thinking possibly Friday, late morning or afternoon, since there isn't too much going on that day with things just starting. If a meetup can't be scheduled, I would still like to meet up with people. Let me know.

Post 48 by Miss Gorgeous (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Sunday, 14-Jun-2009 13:53:47

Just a suggestion, since Friday night is the first day of the whole thing would Friday night work for all your schedules? Late Friday night or around that time or Saturday night?

Post 49 by Mexican Spitfire (Eating the elephant one bite at a time.) on Sunday, 14-Jun-2009 14:19:36

Lol is Cassandra buying the drinks?

Post 50 by Thom3of5 (Do the Doo.) on Sunday, 14-Jun-2009 14:44:00

Champagne and Strawberries for you, Araceli. Just like I give you when we play at the zone bar. *smiles*

Post 51 by C_for_Chaos (Generic Zoner) on Sunday, 14-Jun-2009 15:04:36

Damn, I might be missing all the fun if I get there on Sunday. *sigh* Not to mention, I might not have a room if I come on Friday.

Post 52 by Liz (The Original) on Sunday, 14-Jun-2009 16:12:22

Friday night won't work for me as there is a NAGDU guide dog meeting then, from 6PM-10PM or so.

Post 53 by SingerOfSongs (Heresy and apostasy is how progress is made.) on Tuesday, 16-Jun-2009 5:14:10

er. yeh. I would probably be at that too, at least for part of it. Really need to make that personal agenda.
On a related note, for the NAGDU meetings, do people usually actually bring their dogs, or leave them behind? That's a *lot of dogs in one room. Just curious. I sorta missed the NAGDU meeting last year.

Post 54 by SingerOfSongs (Heresy and apostasy is how progress is made.) on Sunday, 21-Jun-2009 2:14:02

Thought some would be interested to know, for people using twitter, there's going to be a tweetup at 6:30 on Friday night. Location to be announced. If there's stil sufficient interest in a zone meetup, let me or Liz know who's interested. I'm going to temporarily make this a sticky topic (at the top of this category) so that if there is interest, and any announcements about it, people will be able to find it easily.

Post 55 by Geek Woman (Owner and Founder of Waldorf PC) on Monday, 22-Jun-2009 17:11:19

i'm totally going to be there also. I'm staying in the Courtyard, that overflow hotel attached to the Marriot. I'd love to meet up with you guys if you are up for it. Also, I'm speaking at the computer science meeting on Wednesday about Microsoft Office 2007, which I so totally love. If any of you guys want to give me your support, it is from 12 to 5. I'm speaking at around three or so. If you can't stay the entire time, come from three to four.

i'm also up for partying. I like getting a group together to go bar hopping in the evenings. Also, feel free to contact me if you'd like to accompany me to my day at the spa. I'm paying for select individuals to enjoy luxury.

Send me a PM. love to hear from a lot of you.

Post 56 by SingerOfSongs (Heresy and apostasy is how progress is made.) on Monday, 22-Jun-2009 18:04:36

I'll be there for the cs meeting, will be interested to hear what you say about 07. At my former job we upgraded the entire place to it not that long ago. Transition wasn't as problematic as I expectd honestly.

Post 57 by Geek Woman (Owner and Founder of Waldorf PC) on Monday, 22-Jun-2009 21:29:07

Yeah, theree is a lot of people who are still scared to make the switch. I chock it up to fear of the unknown, that's it. I use it religiously now and will never go back to 03. Cool that you will be at the CS meeting.

Post 58 by jamesk (This site is so "educational") on Tuesday, 23-Jun-2009 4:08:30

Hi,
Just curious as to whether anyone's staying until the 9th?
If so, perhaps we could get together then. I'm leaving on Greyhound at 4 on the 9th, so maybe sometime earlier that day if someone would like to meet up.
Drop me a note and let me know.

I will be there as well. Unfortunately my roommate and I are staying at the hilton. So yeah if anyone decides to cancel and wants to give up their maryot room or court yardroom and don't need their room anymore I'd greatly appreciate it, lol. We gotta walk 7 blocks just to be in the thrum of things. Also, don't forget about southern strums, there will be alot of performers there that are some amazing artists, including myself, so come out and support the texas association of blind students in their southern strums fund raiser. Also, what other things will be addressed at the computer science meeting this year? And also anyone wanting to schedule a meet up at the convention feel free to private message me here on the zone, and we can schedule something.
Cheers
Jess

Southern Strums Pulls into the
Motor City

San Antonio, Texas – For five years the Texas Association of Blind Students (TABS) has brought together some of the organization’s finest musical talents in the convenience of one exceptional performance. In times past the benefit concert has evolved into a tradition in the general flow of the National Federation of the Blind’s annual convention, and this year the event is raising the bar, venturing out into the general public as the main entertainment for one of Detroit’s finest jazz restaurants. Join TABS, in collaboration with Seldom Blues, as they proudly present Southern Strums 2009.

In the chaotic landscape that is the vibrant annual convention of the National Federation of the Blind one often wonders where the time will be found to do it all. Seasoned members and first time conventioneers are always astounded by the sheer number of new people there are to meet, but the benefit to this dynamic fundraiser is that these interactions can be struck up and rekindled in the midst of a relaxing atmosphere serenaded by some of the NFB’s brightest performers.

“Southern Strums,” says TABS president, Juan del Rosario, “is as much about providing an evening of top notch entertainment as it is about raising funds for educational projects benefiting blind students across the state of Texas. We work around the year to ensure our fellow students have equal access to educational, employment and technological opportunities, and Southern Strums is a good means of conveying our message in a wholesome manner for everyone involved.”

All Federationists are welcomed to Seldom Blues, conveniently located in the Renaissance Center. The show kicks off at 6:00 PM and runs until the lights go out at 10:00 PM. All guests are kindly asked to provide a donation of five dollars to be a part of this special event to a TABS representative at the registration table next to the restaurant entrance. Come one, come all. This will be an elegant evening you will not want to miss.

About the Texas Association of Blind Students

TABS is a membership organization devoted to the advancement of blind students of all ages. Since its inception in 1990, TABS has worked on multiple levels to encourage the equal participation of blind individuals in all functions of society. Through instructional seminars, state and national conventions, legislative action, social events, and literature, we strive to promote independence and self-advocacy. The organization operates as a whole under the principle that inside and outside the classroom blind students are fully capable of leading normal productive lives. In order to reinforce this belief, it is necessary to view the change within blind students themselves. Thus, our ongoing objective is to work in conjunction with the National Association of Blind Students (NABS) and to a larger extent with the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) to build a sturdy foundation of useful skills, solid confidence, and raw determination so that we may in turn show the public that blindness is not the limitation it is thought to be. In essence, the primary goal of TABS is to follow its parent organizations in changing what it means to be blind.

Post 66 by guitargod1 (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Wednesday, 24-Jun-2009 21:05:01

For anyone who might be interested, I'll be putting on a guitar workshop at the convention on July 6th from six until eight pm in the LaSalle B Room. Level 5. Come check it out! I'll also have time to fit in private lessons at various times while I'm there so drop me a private message or e mail etc if you want to book some time. I'll also hopefully be backing up a very talented singer at a gig... I'll be sure to tweet all the details when it's all been confirmed. I might jump on here and post it too if I have time... By the way, anyone who wants a guitar lesson at the convention, they're on me. I know money's tight for a lot of people so I'll do my bit to help out.

Post 67 by guitargod1 (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Wednesday, 24-Jun-2009 21:06:42

One more thing. if you have any questions or whatever, please don't post them on here. I really don't have time to be hanging on here reading new posts so please get in touch with me via pm, aim, msn, etc. All that info is in my profile. Thanks!

Post 68 by jessmonsilva (Taking over the boards, one topic at a time.) on Thursday, 25-Jun-2009 1:20:06

so I know this isn't exactly a look for musicians board but since it's related to nfb convention I figured I'd ask.
Anyone who is going to convention who can play a guitar, and learn some songs pretty fast if given the mp3's? They'd have to be available from 6:20 to 6:45 pm. July 6th
Send me a private message for those who can.
And sorry if this was kind of a random off topic post, but since this was the convention board, I figured I'd put it up there.

Post 69 by Shadow_Cat (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Saturday, 27-Jun-2009 6:03:59

Wow, i've wanted to go to Detroit for months now, but thought I'd have a summer job that would prevent it. By the time my job fell through, the deadline for requesting assistance from the state had already passed, and my state President is standing firm to it. I don't blame him. I just wish there was some possible way I could go! I even have a room I could stay in with three other roommates, but transportation and food and stuff are out of the question. It's a real bummer, reading this board and wishing so much that I could be there for all the action, and meet so many of you guys! Serious growl! *Frown* Hmmm, maybe I should have put this on the rant board? But it's about Convention, so I guess it belongs here.

Post 70 by The SHU interpreter (I just keep on posting!) on Saturday, 27-Jun-2009 18:20:56

Post 75 by The SHU interpreter (I just keep on posting!) on Wednesday, 01-Jul-2009 0:28:06

yo, what did you pack for the convention.

i packed 3 formal outfits and casual jeans and t shirt.
One of the outfits will be used for the banquit which consists of a brown evening dress with a pair of stockings and nice peep toe shoes that have strapps at the top of the ankle.
I bought this dress a while ago actually the day i bought 2 pairs of suits i wore when i went to the united nations conference.
its the first time i will atleast showw off the nice dress.

Post 76 by Reyami (I've broken five thousand! any more awards going?) on Wednesday, 01-Jul-2009 3:07:11

As far as I know, the banquet's the only event or meeting where one would have to dress formally, unless there's something going on where that attire is required.
I'm packing mostly capris, some short-sleeved shirts, a sweat shirt in case I get cold, the usual crap. lol Oh, and since i'm bringing my guide dog, I got one of those little five-pound bags of dog food from the pet store the other day. Miraculously, it fits in the suitcase. lol

Post 77 by jessmonsilva (Taking over the boards, one topic at a time.) on Wednesday, 01-Jul-2009 20:23:35

I gotta go buy a nice banquet dress methinks. I don't have anything I'd like to bring for the banquet, rofl.

blerg. I'm planning on going this year, but I really don't like the hotel in Dallas. Very bad location, and everything's really expensive, even for a hotel..

Well, as I live in Dallas, this will be the first year that I will be able to attend the convention. Having never attended a convention of any sort before, I am looking forward to the experience. It might also be nice to put bodies and faces to letters/voices from the zone as well. :)
